Initial local press reports indicate that the Israeli attack left at least 18 people dead. However, this figure has not yet been officially confirmed.

In reaction to the attack, teleSUR, the multi-state Latin American alternative communications platform, strongly condemned this violation of freedom of information. Its full statement is presented below.

“teleSUR strongly and unequivocally condemns the airstrike carried out by the Israeli Air Force, which destroyed facilities belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Tehran and disrupted its operations.

This deliberate attack constitutes an unacceptable and intolerable act of violence under any circumstances and amounts to a direct assault on freedom of expression, the right to information, and the lives of journalists and media workers.

teleSUR emphasizes that, even in conflict zones, media outlets are essential civilian actors and their protection must be a priority. The escalation of attacks on non-military infrastructure represents a clear violation of international humanitarian law, aiming to intimidate press professionals and restrict the free flow of information.

Regrettably, this aggression is part of a growing pattern of violence and harassment against journalists and media in the Global South. Amid the Western media and platforms’ hegemonic narrative —where misinformation exacerbates confrontations— teleSUR underscores the need to preserve communication channels that contribute to diverse perspectives on rising geopolitical tensions and foster dialogue among nations.

In line with its commitment to responsible journalism, teleSUR reaffirms its stance in favor of peace and respect for the sovereignty of nations, free from external interference. At the same time, it urgently calls on the international community, human rights organizations, and nations committed to press freedom to condemn these attacks on media institutions.

Finally, teleSUR expresses its willingness to collaborate with IRIB to help restore its operations.”
